Fascinating Prague

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

The capital of the Czech Republic is one of the most important historical preservation sites in central Europe. Prague’s unique city heart has been a UNESCO world cultural and natural heritage site since 1992.

Prague is a great city for those in love. Remnants of the city’s history are found on nearly every corner.

A stroll through the Old City past Powder Tower (1475), the old town hall and other equally beautiful baroque architectural treasures leads to the Charles Bridge, one of the most photographed bridges in the world.

Prague Castle was created on the Hradshin River by a landowner named Premysl sometime around 870, and Prague soon became the epicentre of the House of Premysl.

Vratislav I, the first Bohemian monarch, transfered the royal household to Vysehrad Castle in 1085, probably due to a power struggle with his brother, Bishop Jaromir.

Prague Castle remained the seat of the bishops of Prague for decades. The Cathedral of St. Vitus, another early structure, is also located on the castle grounds.

Prague grows up.

Protected by the two castles, an influx of German and Jewish businessmen and local craftsmen led to fast growth on both sides of the Muldau River. The largest fortified zone was near the already ancient Prague Castle. Prague received its city charter in 1234 from King Wenceslas I, who made it his primary residence.

Shortly thereafter, the “New Town” districts of Mala Strana and Hradshin were ffounded. The fourteenth century brought yet more prosperity to Prague. In 1348 the first university in central Europe was founded here, Charles University, named after Emperor Charles IV.

In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, Prague was torn apart by two religious wars. The Hussite Wars (1419-1437) and the Thirty Years War (1618-1648) left deep scars.

The events that set off both of these conflicts took place in Prague. These include the famous “defenestrations”, in which Catholic officials and dignitaries were thrown out of windows by dissenters, the first time by Hussites, followers of rebel reformer Jan Hus, and later by Protestants, setting off the Thirty Years War.

The victims of the first defenestration did not fall far, but landed in the arms of a mob waiting outside to lynch them. The second time was from an upper story, but the Catholics were saved because they fell into a heap of manure. From the Catholic point of view, divine intervention had intervened. The two long, debilitating conflicts slaughtered hundreds of thousands, setting back growth for generations. Like other afflicted cities, Prague lost most of its international standing during this time.

Prague in Spring-Time.

In 1945, Prague became the capital of the Soviet Socialist Republic of Czechoslovakia. Communist leadership was the cause of a deep-seated financial crisis: the Soviet central planning bureau contributed to nearly complete economic disaster.

In the spring of 1968, public criticism grew and much of the population became increasingly radicalized. Street demonstrations of the “Prague Spring” were news all over the earth.

Ultimately, power struggles within the ruling party led to the invasion of Prague by Warsaw Pact troops on 21 August 1968, and the brief period of expression was ruthlessly extinguished.

It would be 1989 before Prague separated itself from Russian control, and in 1993 was named capital of an independent Czech Republic.

3 Most Dangerous Myths About Searching for Public Records Online

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

Lots of people would have us believe that conducting a reasonably comprehensive or especially free people search is a piece of cake. However, that would only be one of the three most dangerous myths about online public records floating around today. To begin with, (1) the availability of online public records is not as widespread as one might think. According to our research:

- Only 35% of public records can be found online;
- Nearly all/ every “free” government public record website contains no personal identifiers, i.e., for privacy purposes, they provide summarized information rather than information about specific individuals.

The federal, state, and local agencies that maintain public records systems make substantial efforts to limit the disclosure of Social Security numbers, phone numbers, and addresses. Some even go so far as to limit the use of the dates of birth. The Social Security number is no longer the “key search tool identifier” it was in the 1980s and early 1990s. Websites with open record searching available to the public generally require only a name, unless a specific case file or docket number or registration number, et cetera, can be substituted.

(2) Government agencies that offer online access on a fee or subscription basis generally disclose partial personal identifiers. Nowadays, very few give Social Security numbers, and those that do often cloak or mask the first five digits. Some cloak the month and date of birth, and only reveal the year of birth. For example, most U.S. District Court and bankruptcy court online systems reveal no personal identifiers on their search results, thus making a reliable “name search” nearly impossible (I’ve tried).

We point this out because the lack of identifiers presents a real problem for employers or financial institutions who, at the same time, are legally required to exert a certain amount of “due diligence” in the process of making certain decisions. The existence of any possible adverse information may have to be double-checked by a hands-on search to ensure the proper match of a given subject to a given adverse record.

Also, we noticed that many governmental websites offering online record access tend to include a warning or disclosure stating that their information could have mis-spellings and/ or should be used for “informational purposes only.” For this reason, such sites should be considered as supplemental or secondary sources only. Again, to protect individuals’ privacy, they may provide summarized information rather than information about specific individuals.

The upshot of which is simply that . . . (3) A criminal record search from such a source usually does not, in and of itself, comply with the Fair Credit Reporting Act regulations involving preemployment screening . . . see video below:

In the meantime, you can find a dozen or so lists of public and private record information companies on this website:

- Address and Telephone Numbers; other lists (provided on that same page) include information on the following topics:

- Aviation
- Bankruptcy
- Corporate/ Trade Name Data
- Credit Information
- Convicted Criminal Information
- Driver and/ or Vehicle
- Education/ Employment
- Environmental
- Foreign Country Information
- Genealogical Information
- Licenses/ Registrations/ Permits
- Litigation/ Judgments/ Tax Liens
- Military Service
- Patents
- Real Estate/ Assessors

Sometimes, the only way to conduct a reasonably certain background check online is from a reputable private vendor. A reputable online vendor may provide access to many records that might not be otherwise found online via Government online sources.

Should You Still Become A Teacher In This Economy?

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

New teachers will always be needed, but in this tough economy many are and may continue to loose their jobs. With all the state budget cuts many are or will be getting cut, which is unfortunate as we really need more and better teacher, not less. But it takes money. We really need to put more towards education and less towards other areas and programs that are not needed as much.

In light of the current economy, is it still a good idea to go to school to become a teacher? Generally speaking, yes because the recession should not last forever. By time a new person going to college completes their education hopefully the economy will be turned around and the state budgets will be back in order. Or at least more funding for education will be in place in order to have more and better teachers.

From this end of the street many of the budget cuts appear to be having a negative effect on PE, Art, Music, etc. more then traditional classroom teachers. Therefore it appears careers in teaching at least in those areas should be stable, especially as older teachers retire. Then once things do turn around, hopefully the other areas (PE, Art, Music, etc) will come back as well.

In addition to needing more teachers (once funding is in place) we will always need better teachers and those teachers with the love, skill, and desire to teach our youth. We do not need those teachers only looking for a paycheck. Of course if all teachers got paid what they deserved that would be great and is an excellent goal to work towards, but bad teachers or those who only care about their paycheck really do need to go.

Even though things are tough now things will turn around and so yes now may be a great time to go to college to earn that degree in education. By time someone who starts today graduates the economy may be thriving and schools needing to hire teachers again.
